The Truancy Compliance Officer will assist with and coordinate the district wide compliance and enforcement of the Tennessee Compulsory Attendance Law; thereby following departmental procedures, MNPS policies, and Tennessee State law. Specifically, this job will focus on legal compliance related to attendance law. This position serves as the liaison between school based personnel and the juvenile court system, with a focus on the identification, documentation, and records verification for truant students. The Truancy Compliance Officer is responsible for filling truancy petitions on all students who are in violations of state compulsory attendance law and working with the staff of juvenile court and the Metro Student Attendance Center as they progress through the petitioning process and documenting the outcomes of each case.What you will do

  • Monitor and enforce the Tennessee compulsory attendance law. Complete the truancy/ educational neglect petition process for all assigned students in their assigned quadrant.
  • Serve as the district representative when coordinating with Juvenile Court Magistrate and MSAC staff during all truancy hearings or court proceedings; and speak on behalf of the school district regarding all petitions, student records, and/or court/school interventions and communication.
  • Collaborate with school level administrators, school attendance teams, and Metro Student Attendance Center (MSAC) to review petitions for all truant students to verify students are in violation of the Tennessee compulsory attendance law and that school teams have completed state required interventions, prior to submitting Juvenile Court referrals.
  • Generate and create reports utilizing Microsoft, Student Management System, and other programs to identify truant students. Communicate and share data report with each quadrant school leadership team.
  • Provide regular updates to school level administrators, leads, and school attendance teams on the status of students referred to Juvenile Court and students with open cases to help bridge communication to support students and their families, holding them accountable through legal processes.
  • Collaborate with Juvenile Court assessment team to monitor court assigned student interventions and provide supports for truant and/or detained youth, while documenting the details of individual cases, legal requirements, and probationary restrictions.
  • Work with Student Services Leadership team to identify alternative educational opportunities as recommended by the Juvenile Court Magistrate for those that are not on schedule to graduate on time.
  • Coordinate quadrant-based community court events and communicate the outcome or disposition of truancy cases to school administrative staff. Also work closely with school teams to plan and develop community outreach to help find the root causes for poor attendance.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities within MNPS and Community Outreach Partners as it relates to attendance and truancy state law.
  • Strong computer skills including the ability to utilize student management systems and databases, Infinite Campus, Share Point, and mastery all Microsoft Office Products.
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to speak in public and during court proceedings.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to successfully interact with and influence diverse students, families, school administrators, and court staff to improve student outcomes.
  • Ability to work within a group/team to complete assigned tasks/responsibilities in a timely manner.
  • A high level of organizational skills, effective time management, accuracy, attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and resourcefulness.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field (e.g. civil service, public service, behavioral health, education) Required

Experience Qualifications

  • For those not possessing a related Bachelor’s degree, substituted experience must be in a related field that provides an understanding of truancy management laws and processes Required

Starting At: $23.84Salaries are determined by factors relevant to the position which may include education, experience, and other qualifications. Final compensation decisions are made at the discretion of MNPS in alignment with organizational policies and procedures. The stated salary range for certificated teaching positions is calculated based on 201 days and should be viewed as a reference. All provided salary ranges serve as a general guideline.
