Position SummaryIndiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) – Bloomington is seeking a qualified and motivated individual to join our mission beginning as early as January 1, 2025, in a 12-month, tenure-track faculty appointment with the School of Medicine Cell and Molecular Cancer Biology (CMCB) program in the Indiana University Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center (IUSCCC) on the Bloomington campus.
The successful candidate will be an externally funded researcher with a track record of administrative and leadership success. Research foci considered include molecular mechanisms of cancer and/or therapeutic development, including the areas of cancer stem cells, the tumor microenvironment, cancer epigenetics, and the regulation of gene expression within various cancer models, including glioblastoma, breast, ovarian, prostate and colon cancers. They will benefit from recently renovated laboratory space with outstanding core facilities (genomics, microscopy/imaging, major animal facilities, chemical biology, others), and access to a large cancer tissue and data bank.
Leadership responsibilities will include serving as the Assistant Director for Research for the IUSM-Bloomington campus and the Director of Graduate Studies for the Cell and Molecular Cancer Biology (CMCB) PhD program. It is anticipated that the Administrative/Operational responsibilities associated with this leadership position will constitute approximately 20% of the successful candidate’s workload.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Serve as the Assistant Director for Research on the IUSM-Bloomington campus
- Serve as the CMCB Director of Graduate Studies
- Supervise IUSM-Bloomington staff, including direct supervision of the Undergraduate/Graduate Student Coordinator
- Supervise CMCB research faculty
- Participate in School, University, IU-Bloomington, and Health System committees, when appropriate and needed
Operational Responsibilities
- Assist with operational needs at the IUSM-Bloomington campus, including collaboration around budget, marketing and development decisions, and executive level decision making around research implementation
- Assist with campus operational needs related to teaching, when necessary
- Provide leadership and administrative support, including faculty development in teaching and research for CMCB faculty, and non-tenure-track teaching and affiliate faculty interested in research
- Serve as an advocate for research to the IUSM, IU Health, and IU-Bloomington, and represent the IUSM-B on committees with these entities, when appropriate and as needed.
- Align research strategic planning and development with Campus, School, and Regional health system strategic plans and initiatives
- Contribute to the IUSM Regional Campus annual evaluation
- Assist with recruiting, retaining, and developing faculty for the CMCB program, when needed
- Assist with recruiting, retaining and supporting graduate students for the CMCB and Anatomy Education PhD programs
- Assist in implementing appropriate tools, information systems, data and system support for research faculty and staff
Instructional Responsibilities
- Participate in teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses, as appropriate for the candidate’s research specialty
- Provide career mentorship to graduate students and junior faculty
- Create and conduct programs internally and externally through professional organizations to contribute to the learning of others
- Advocate for and pursue a non-punitive environment, free from intimidation, retaliation and learner mistreatment or neglect
Research Responsibilities * Transfer of an active, extramurally funded fundamental research program in cancer biology and engagement in scholarly work to contribute to new knowledge
- Supervise/mentor graduate, undergraduate and medical students
- Serve on student thesis committees
- Contribute to the scientific community and academic life of IUSM-Bloomington and IUSCCC through research and service

Basic Qualifications
- Terminal degree required. PhD or equivalent
- A strong publication and funding track record in cancer research with demonstrated ability to develop an internationally competitive and externally funded research program in the field of cancer biology
- Experience with, and a thorough understanding of, graduate education
- Demonstrated excellence in leadership as evidenced by at least three years leading an educational or administrative team.
- Preference given to those who have achieved tenure and the rank of Associate Professor or Professor; or who have demonstrated achievement of the requirements for tenure and appointment at the Associate Professor level or above.
